There are loads of great books aimed at KS4 students and adults throughout the LRC, but as the older years do not have the regular LRC sessions and may find time in the day pretty tight, there is now a spinner dedicated to fiction for older readers as you walk into the LRC. This means you can find great titles in seconds. Reading a range of fiction is great brain training, improving cognitive ability, memory, writing skills and is a great way to unwind. Years 10 and 11 students are also welcome to email the LRC ([email protected]) to check if books are available and reserve them for collection.
This year Hans Price Academy entered a year seven team into The Kids' Lit Quiz, an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years. Quizzes are held in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and USA. The winning team from each regional heat competes in a National Final with the winner competing in the World Final held in New Zealand. Jakob, Rhiannon, Amelia and Toby represented Hans Price and did incredibly well. They worked hard for all ten rounds, achieving the highest score of any team in round three and Jakob also winning one of the individual questions against all competitors. Their tie-break question to win free books was “What was Hermione Granger’s middle name?” and Toby won the tie-break for them with a lightning quick correct answer of “Jean”. They finished within the top half of the teams taking part. Colston’s School were the overall winners and will be moving on to the National Final. The team are eager to compete again next year alongside a new year seven team saying “It was really good. We made a great team because we all have really different types of knowledge and worked really well together. We won free books and got free food. I would definitely do it again! We want a second chance!” As well as featuring in the printed Hans Price newsletter the LRC section is now going to be online too! Enjoy!
This week Non Pratt, author of Remix, Trouble, Unboxed and Truth or Dare, spent the day with us at Hans Price delivering a talk to all of years 9 and 10 based on Gender in Pop Culture. Non also led workshops to three lucky groups, two focusing on character creation and the other involved writing letters to ourselves, inspired by Unboxed.
The whole day was engaging, inspiring and thought provoking. Students felt that it challenged the way they thought about characters and theme in literature and pop culture and will influence they way they write in the future. Many students have bought or borrowed Non's books and have given them glowing reviews! All of Non's books are available in the LRC. Back in January Hans Price LRC applied to the Siobhan Dowd Trust about a grant opportunity which funds students to select and buy books for their school libraries. Hans Price was lucky enough to be chosen so at the beginning of April a group of book loving students travelled to Bristol to choose the books they felt the LRC was missing. The students involved organised their own budget, browsed through hundreds of books, changed their minds countless times and finally made some great selections for everyone to enjoy in our LRC. All the new books are on the shelves and ready to be borrowed! To allow even more students to have their favourite books and summer wishlist titles added to the LRC collection, we are using part of the grant money to order from another independent bookseller. This order will be entirely made up of books requested by students. There are a limited number of books we can buy so you need to make the request for your books as convincing as possible to give them the best chance of making the list and being available for you to borrow! You can use one of the book request forms available in the LRC to submit your suggestion or use your creativity to make your book choice really stand out! Visit the LRC and speak to Ms Allchurch if you have any questions or tweet the LRC @HansPriceLRC. Find out more from the North Somerset Libraries website: Click Here |
