This is my book review on the book i read called ‘Whisper’. The book ‘Whisper’ is about a girl called Demi Valentino, and she had suffered through meningitis, and when she had woken up in the Hospital, she couldn't hear anything. Her mum and the doctor was stood talking right in front of her, at the end of the bed, but she thought that they were whispering really quietly, so quietly that she couldn't hear a thing. She saw two doctors pushing a wheelchair, and was wondering why she couldn't hear the wheels making any noise.
Her mum told her that she had gone deaf.
She had a friend called Jules. His sister is deaf, so he knew how to sign. So he would teach her how to sign different things. She has a best friend called Nadia, they would do everything together, but after Demi had gone deaf it was quite hard to understand each other. But they still hang out a little.
But then Demi needed to go to a school for the deaf, because it was very hard for her to try and lip read everyone all the time. She needed to go somewhere that is easier to communicate. So she moved schools. She met new friends, and tried to learn a different language, which was sign language. She got better and better at it. She had met lot’s of new friends called Stella, Keisha, Luke and much more. When she first met them, they told her that some of them would have their very own deaf names. Stella’s would be ‘Star’ and Keisha’s would be ‘Chatter’.
This is a very good book, because the author really tried to explain what life would be like to be deaf. She showed lot’s of emotion for each character. And it makes you feel like you’re in their shoes and feeling some of the emotion they feel.
I think i know why the book is called ‘Whisper’, because at the end of the book one of the character’s said “It doesn't matter if she’s deaf. My Aunty Demi can listen with her eyes, and whisper with her hands.” And i think when he said that, His Aunty can listen with her eyes, he meant that she could lip read. And when he said that “And she could whisper with her hands.” I think it meant that she could talk with her hands (using sign language) and that she could show emotion with her hands and facial expressions.
I think that this book is suitable for teens, so i would recommend this book to any of my friends, because once you read this book, you get to understand more about what it’s like to be deaf, and to explore the different types of feelings and emotion that the characters go through.
