They've all ended up in the pile for different reasons: some I'm reading for work, pausing to make notes or flicking back and forth; a few are gifts (that I wouldn't usually choose for myself) or recommendations from students, friends and colleagues; one’s the eighth book in a series that I love and I put the other books on hold when it finally arrived at my door. A couple just caught my eye and I didn't know much about them before I started reading. In the first case it was the title and link to a TV show I loved growing up and in the second, it was an author I like and a beautiful cover.
Something I've also realised looking at this pile of books is that anything within my reach when I put a book down becomes a bookmark. Just in this pile there's a flower, a hairband, an actual bookmark and a tiny zombie crawling out of "Calm".
One book I'm now coming to the end of and really enjoying is A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge. Sometimes, when a person dies, their spirit goes looking for somewhere to hide. Some people have space within them, perfect for hiding. The story follows a girl called Makepeace. She knows that ghosts exist. She has spent nights locked in a church by her mother, fighting to keep the ghosts from crawling inside her mind. When everything changes in Makepeace's limited world, she is sent away to live with her Father's rich and powerful ancestors and it soon becomes clear that she has to use everything she has learned to survive. |
I would definitely recommend this book. I'm trying to slow myself down reading it because I want the end to be everything I hope for! It would be great to hear what everyone else is reading so I can line up another great book after this one!
